3 Unique Strategies To Make Your Public Speaking Better

Intro

Public-Speaking

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Public Speaking is:

a) the act or process of making speeches in public.

b) the art of effective oral communication with an audience.

Public Speaking is a hectic task for most of us I know. Even the thought of standing in front of people to say a few words is not a simple responsibility.

I was one of those people who have a phobia of crowds and speaking in public. I try my best to avoid crowded places, since I’m an introvert and dislike confrontations.

But there came a time I needed to get out of my comfort zone and meet the crowd when my primary six Madam (Miss Jane) asked me to join the reading and debate club because she saw how good I was with my English Language.

Since then, my self-confidence and courage level soared higher and higher until this day.

Certain things helped me along with my progression in public speaking; continued practice, inhaling and exhaling, planning, and positive pep talks, including the below-listed strategies.

You can stand in front of a large crowd and give a speech or teach people as well.

Know Your Audience

Check your audience and learn about them. Ensure you know their background, things they often talk about, and even jokes they love.

Prepare Your Materials Well

Use the data you get to prepare your presentation. You should relate it to the design of the slides, choice of words, level of information, jokes you can use, and many more. Prepare it in the right order to present the materials well.

Be Yourself

You don’t have to be someone else in presenting your subject. Be yourself and let your personality come through during the presentation. It helps the audience to trust you faster because you also show who you are to them.

My Thoughts

I can relate to the fear of crowds but I believe that one can still overcome following these steps, being prepared, and avoiding caffeine and sugar because these two tend to increase anxiety. Also, remember to breathe it relaxes the mind and body. Stretching the body for 15 minutes before your program helps relax your muscles. Do not forget to get conversant with your presentation or material. Less I forget to mention be optimistic, #positivethoughts help in achieving success. Finally, be confident in yourself, there will always be people in the crowd or around the table rooting for you. I hope these help.

    1. Hello Rohak, glad you’ve enjoyed reading this. Thanks for the feedback, yeah, knowing your audience help reduce tensions, I believe seeing familiar faces and being knowledgeable about the kind of people in your audience will enable you to structure your content or presentation or speech to suit them. This means allowing your audience to relate personally to your delivery.
